The long-lasting, lightweight, flexible and weatherproof properties of EPDM rubber roofing have made it a mainstay of many flat roofing, shed, garage, summerhouse and garden office projects. EPDM, or Ethylene Propylene Diene Terpolymer, is also easy to install for any professional contractor or confident DIY-er.

Once in place, EPDM rubber roofing has an impressive lifespan of up to 50 years. However, in the sun-drenched heat of summer, there's one central burning installation question that needs answering: can you install EPDM rubber roofing in hot weather?

For everything else related to the key advantages to installing an EPDM rubber roof, check out our previous blog: What Are The Benefits Of Installing EPDM Rubber Roofing? But, if you want to know about the appropriate weather conditions for an EPDM installation, Roof Giant is here to help....

Can EPDM Roofing Be Installed In Hot Weather?

EPDM membranes are not only flexible in feel, they're also flexible in the fitting process as well. You can easily install EPDM at any time of year - summer or winter - in hot or cold conditions, making it an incredibly convenient and adaptable choice for your next roofing project. It's also a lot quicker to install and less laborious than more traditional roofing methods.

Can EPDM Be Installed In The Rain?

When installing EPDM, outdoor conditions must be dry. Therefore, the types of weather you absolutely have to avoid are either rain, snow or particularly severe conditions where temperatures fall below freezing, which can cause your EPDM bonding adhesives to fail. A good rule of thumb for a successful EPDM installation is to only go ahead if temperatures are unlikely to fall below 5°C.

Your roofing substrate must be as dry as possible so that EPDM contact adhesives and primers can create a secure, reliable bond as they won't cure properly in damp, wet or extremely cold conditions. Additionally, damp substrates can also cause problems that negatively impact the working quality, longevity and visual appeal of your EPDM roof. So make sure you keep an eye on the weather forecast before you get started.
