Compatibility
First and foremost, you will want to ensure that any blind you are purchasing is compatible with your window. To do this simply open your VELUX roof window to find the type sign which is located on the top edge of the roof window sash and becomes visible when the window is opened. Type signs differ in appearance depending on the model and generation of your VELUX roof window. You can find more information on this in our VELUX product codes guide.
The type sign will show your window code, which consists of the window type and size code (for example GGL MK04). Once you know your window code you can check this against the VELUX blinds available to make sure they are compatible.
Room location
One of the most important considerations when choosing your blinds is the room location. Think about the room you are buying for and what it is primarily used for.
For example, if you are purchasing blinds for a living room, you may want to ensure that the blinds you choose do not create an unsightly glare on a television screen. The same may be true for a home office or study that has a computer screen. VELUX Duo Blackout Roller Blinds work well in a home office as they allow greater control over lighting, with the option of blackout when needed and softly diffused light during the day.
For rooms on the ground floor such as a living room or dining room you may also be looking for extra privacy. VELUX Translucent Pleated Blinds are a great choice for living and dining areas as they provide privacy while diffusing soft natural light into your room.
If you are purchasing blinds for a bedroom or nursery, ones that offer total blackout such as VELUX Blackout Roller Blinds or VELUX Blackout Energy Pleated Blinds are ideal.
Bathrooms and kitchens require a blind that can cope with the demands of a humid environment. VELUX Venetian Blinds are specially designed to be low-maintenance, moisture-resistant and easy to clean, making them perfect for busy kitchens and steamy bathrooms.
For rooms that receive strong direct sunlight you may want to consider an external heat protection product such as VELUX Anti-Heat Blinds or VELUX Roller Shutters. These products stop the sun's rays before they reach the roof window glass, helping to prevent overheating. Roller shutters also add insulation and help deter break-ins.
Style
Consider whether you want a blind that will stand out and draw the eye, or whether you are looking for something that blends seamlessly with the rest of your decor.
If you are looking to add a pop of colour and personality to a bedroom then a VELUX Blackout Roller Blind is a great option as they come in a wide range of colours and patterns.
If you cannot find the exact colour to match your taste or interiors, the Colour by You collection allows you to customise your blind by choosing from thousands of colours, with a choice of white or brushed aluminium side rails.
Functionality
VELUX blinds are available in three control modes: manual, solar-powered and electric.
To choose the right control mode you should consider where your roof windows are located and how often you expect to adjust the blind.
Manual blinds are a good option when your roof windows are within reach and can be a cost-effective choice.
Solar-powered and electric blinds are ideal for out-of-reach VELUX roof windows or for homeowners who want the convenience of remote operation. These products come with a ready-to-use wall switch and can also be upgraded with intelligent home control solutions, allowing smartphone control, scheduling and automation.
